Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn is an important, powerful book. If you are interested in 20th Century history or interested in the future of humanity - this book is required reading. Although this book played a significant role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, its primary importance is the message it proclaims to the present and to the future.

Indeed, in the early chapters of his Gulag Archipelago Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1974) provided an extended analysis of the labor economics of the camps, based on anecdote and memoir; the incentives that he described are quite different from those emphasized by the work presently under review, and it would be of interest to see discussion of the possible reasons for this divergence.

He received books on loan from libraries in Moscow and St Petersburg, which he used in writing the study that made him a Marxian theorist, The Development of Capitalism in Russia (1899).

The book is comprised of the authors own account of being imprisoned for ten years due to just knowing someone outside of Russia! It is also a compendium of some 200 other accounts of other people imprisoned, some killed. I’ll be honest at the beginning of this book review, The Gulag Archipelago is not a fun book to read.
